Fairfield, CT - Witch Dunking Pond
Fairfield, CT - Witch Dunking Pond
It's no secret the early colonization of this nation was plagued with intolerance.
Puritan society was strict, closed-minded and harsh with it's warped sense of justice. The witch trials in Salem, MA have dominated the history books and American Literature as examples of the regretful behavior of the early inhabitants of the Plymouth Rock.
But it wasn't just Salem. Connecticut had it's own witch encounters and overreactions. Early incidents in Windsor, Wethersfield and scattered throughout the state resulted in executions but Fairfield, CT clearly takes the witch cake for most fascinated cases. First in 1651 Goodwife Bassett was hung then in 1653 Goodwife Mary Knapp was accused of witchcraft and having "witch marks". Of course upon examination of this simple woman any birth mark or mole was interpreted as a mark and she was hung. It's said that her accuser admitted that Knapp was innocent at her public hanging but of course, they couldn't let that get in the way of a good ole' public execution. After all, there was a crowd to please and children to entertain.
Nearly 40 years later during the height of the Salem Witch Trials, another Fairfield woman, Mercy Disbrowe was accused of witchery. While on trial the authorities needed to perform tests to determine if she truly was an accomplice of Satan. The popular witch dunking was performed. They held her down in a pond and see if she floats. Sounds perfectly scientific. Many spectators claimed she did float so she was set for her own execution. Luckily for her, cooler heads prevailed and some outside authorities stepped in after the seeing the hysteria and carnage that ensued in Salem. They had Mercy on Mercy but she wasn't as forgiving.
Legend has it several ponds and lakes in the Fairfield area are the location of the famous witch dunking. And you guessed it, Mercy haunts the hell out of everyone of them. Of course with each pond and lake the legend varies. Some claim Mercy died during the dunking, others claim it's not even Mercy but someone else the history books seemed to have forgotten. Either way, if you are taking an evening drive in Fairfield, CT and see a small lake or pond, take a look at the water. Perhaps you'll see a vengeful wet goodwife ready to lay the evil smackdown on your WASP ass.

Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal

(ewww, lightning from demonic eyes will strike the plane)
Nearly two years ago, dedicated listener, Mike Meyer sent us a nice care package of various items. One such item was a DVD for "Turbulence 3 : Heavy Metal"
This was the 3rd installment of a low budget film series involving terror in the skies long before the airline industry was faced with real-life terrorists and poisonous snakes from Hawaii.
The reason why Mike had sent us the DVD was because the plot centered around the "Stull Prophecy". This omen was based of the urban legend of Stull, Kansas which Hometown Tales has discussed and documented frequently. The legend involves an old church in the middle of nowhere that supposedly marked the location of an entrance to Hell. Of course if you've seen our video segment on the "Gateway to Hell" in you've realized it's just a sad fabricated halloween story that has probably done damage and vandalism to a historic old cemetery. (CHECK OUT OUR VIDEO SEGMENT)
In the mundanely-acted Turbulence 3 a controversial rocker, Slade Craven is scheduled to perform his last concert abort a luxury Boeing 747. Of course the show will be broadcasted to millions online. The only catch is some Satanic terrorists hijack the show and plane. Their goal: to take the plane, and 10 million online viewers, down into a fiery blaze at Stull- fulfilling an ancient prophecy.
This movie is cool for only 1 reason, ok maybe 2. It subtly involves a "hometown tale" and it's so bad it's almost good. I stress the word "almost"
My official review - If you enjoy b-movies that often air lonely Saturday afternoons on the Sci-Fi channel. This is your flick.
Thanks Mike for the gift and sorry it took 2 years to watch Turbulence 3, it was well worth the wait.

Selma, AL - The Trotter House
This private residence seems to have a presence that is often trying to catch the attention of the family who lives there: a shadow seen from the corner of your eye, doors open that had been firmly shut, lights turned on in empty rooms, knocks, steps, falling plants, exploding jars and floating balls of light. Years ago, a young man, who lived in the house with his mother, was killed in an automobile accident. He died 50 years to the day before the new owners signed a contract on the house, lay in state in the dining room for three days and was buried 50 years to the day before the family moved into the house. This home was featured in the FOX Network show Encounters. A psychic connected with the show had several “brushes” with the spirit.
Marion, AL - Ghosts of Judson County
Form one of the most haunted colleges in America come stories people of being touched by unseen hands. There are even rumors of marks left on some victims.
In Building J, a female form has been seen looking out windows along with sounds of scattering feet and whispering voices. Carlisle Hall is believed to be haunted by an unknown female spirit as well. In Room 313 of Kirtley Hall you may encounter the ghost of Anne Kirtley herself another girl who supposedly killed herself in that room. The doors and windows shake, there are cold spots and, more often than not, the entire room is a “cold spot”. Even in summer.
Marion also is home to the Marion Military Institute. During the civil war, battle victims were taken to the Chapel on campus, which was turned into a hospice. Directly behind the chapel the ones that didn’t survive were buried there. Since then cadets have had experiences with objects in their room being moved, unusual noises in the hallways and rooms, also experiences with paranormal activity. Some believe that the spirits that live on campus, due to their extreme mood changes, possesses some cadets. There have been no cases of violent ghosts or apparitions, but there have been several reports made about cadets having been alone and having a sudden rush of someone being there when there is not.
